G8 light bulbs are line voltage (120 - 130 volt) halogen light bulbs found in a variety of applications such as track lighting, retail case display lighting, desk lamps, pendant fixtures, under counter lighting, landscape lighting, and bicycle or motorcycle headlights.
G8 bulbs are also referred to a JCD type halogen light bulbs. G8 is a coded designation which indicates the bipin G8 base measures 8 millimeters between the pins. G8 bulbs have straight bipin type pins and are commonly available with clear glass light capsules. Please note that JCD type halogen light bulbs should not be touched with the bare skin of human hands. It is recommended to use a tissue, cloth, or glove when installing. Halogen capsule light bulbs utilize a semi-permeable glass with can be penetrated by oil from skin. This oil can create hot spots on the glass, which may reduce the life of the G8 base light bulb. Additionally, it is recommended to always turn off power to your fixtures before changing G8 halogen light bulbs. Live power can shock internal halogen capsule filaments, resulting in premature lamp life.
G8 MR16 bulbs have reflectors for applications where better beam control and whiter light are preferred. More commonly, G8 bipin bulbs are single capsules with the G8 bipin base for use inside covered light fixtures. Some rare applications require the use of shorter capsule G8 bulbs due to size limitations of the existing fixture. In these cases, a G8 short 35 millimeter version was created. A 35mm G8 bulb is only 1.37 inches in overall length to fit lower profile G8 fixtures.
The most durable Long-Life G8 bulbs utilize multi-support filaments for longer life, cooler gases for extended run times and crisper, whiter light than standard halogen G8 JCD type bulbs. G8 base bulbs should not be confused with other types of long-life halogen bulbs, which come in many different pin types with varying distance between their pins. To be safe, always remember this rule of thumb, all G8 bulbs have pins 8 millimeters apart!
